USVACOOK01 - Cookeite with Muscovite on Cleavelandite
$ 89.00 AVAILABLE
Amelia Courthouse, Virginia, USA
miniature - 3.9 x 3.9 x 1.9
ORDER

ex.  Mike Groben

This specimen consists of an aggregate of honey colored muscovite crystals in a cleavelandite matrix. Mike identifies this specimen as cookeite, but cookeite xls are usually very small to microscopic in size. There are a couple small xls on this specimen that could be cookeite, but I cannot say for sure. Just trying to describe the piece as best we can.

CNAZMAL01 - Azurite and Malachite
$ 95.00 SOLD
Tongshan Copper-Iron Mine, Guichi, Anhui Province, China
small cabinet - 8.2 x 6.3 x 2.2 cm

This specimen consists of inky blue, bright, sparkling Azurite xls which are densely packed on the display faces. In addition, there is what I would call a "ribbon" of dark green, botryoidal malachite xls as well as as a number of spherical or botryoidal xls to 5mm. Perhaps a small bruise or two, but otherwise intact and very showy. It has a sawn back.

The copper deposits in this area of Anhui province have been mined for thousands of years, probably the longest continuous operation on earth. Small scale mining lets specimens escape the huge crushers that are used elsewhere.

USCORDSFLQZ01 - Rhodochrosite, Fluorite and Quartz
$ 495.00 AVAILABLE
Sunnyside Mine, Silverton District, San Juan County, Colorado
small cabinet - 9.0 x 6.8 x 4.0 cm
ORDER

Some time ago, Kim and I attended the Friends of Mineralogy conference in Kelso, WA. There, we were approached about purchasing a collection of old Rhodochrosite specimens, which we happily agreed to. This is the last specimen from that collection. The owner asked that we not refer to them, so we are not.

This specimen consists of matrix that displays snow white to water clear quartz spires to 3-4mm; heavily modified cubic, water clear fluorite xls to several mm along with pink, rhombohedral to rosette shaped rhodochrosite xls to 8mm. Minor pyrite. No damage. Quality specimens such as this one, are getting ever harder to find except when old collections get recycled. Enjoy!

USCORDSFL02 - Rhodochrosite with Fluorite
$ 495.00 AVAILABLE
Urad Mine, Dailey District, Clear Creek County, Colorado
thumbnail - 2.2 x 1.6 x 1.6 cm
ORDER

Ex Richard A. Kosnar Collection

Rare Locality

The Urad mine produced molybdenum from 1914 until 1919. During World War 2 Molycorp controlled the property but there seems to have been little or no production. AMAX gained control of the property in 1963 and began extensive exploration that resulted in the discovery of the blind Henderson orebody in 1964. AMAX began production from URAD in 1967 and exhausted the orebody in 1974 after extracting nearly 14 mt with an average grade of 0.35%.

For all you Rhodochrosite collectors, this is a rarity. I have only come across several specimens from this locality. This specimen consists of two inter-grown cherry red xls with a minor coating of pink micro rhodochrosite and pyrite xls. The major rhombs display altered or stepped faces. Also found on the faces of the two rhombs are purple micro fluorite xls, a bit of quartz and possibly apatite. A unique specimen with a good pedigree from a long closed locale. No damage. Enjoy!
