October 8, 2007 Update

Recently, I had a chance to visit Scott Werschky of Miners Lunchbox in Reno.  I traveled there because Scott had been holding a number of outstanding Uchucchacua Rhodochrosite specimens for me and the time had come for us to work out a deal. After an excellent Vietnamese lunch, we headed over to his expansive warehouse. When we arrived, the first thing that Scott showed me was a collection of specimens he had just purchased.  They are from a South African collector named Wolfgang Pohl.  I sorted through all of the collection and although it contained specimens from all around the world, many of the specimens hale from South Africa, notably N'Chwaning.

Upon closer examination of Wolfgangs hand written collection cards, I noticed that many of the South African specimens in his collection were purchased from Desmond Sacco and Bruce Cairncross; world famous collectors themselves.  An interesting note about Wolfgang's collection is that he hand drew a picture of each specimen on the collection card he created for it.  I've taken a couple of pictures of a representative card and have posted them below.  Each specimen comes with his card and some even come with the card from the company or individual he purchased it from.

Mr. Pohl put together quite a collection and I feel honored to be able to share a bit of it with you.  There are a variety of specimens from all around the world and I'm sure there's something here that will appeal to just about every collectors taste.  As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me a line.  Enjoy my latest update.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together!

Calcite and Duftite
Specimen #pohl01
4.2 x 3.6 x 2.7cm
Miniature
Tsumeb Mine
Tsumeb, Namibia
Defunct Local
$95

To kick things off, here is a somewhat unusual and very interesting calcite specimen.  It's made up of a "block" of "stepped" and water clear calcite xls that are being coated by a generation of sea foam green duftite xls. Another interesting thing going on with this specimen (pointed out to me by Scott) was the inclusion of native copper in this piece.  All in all, a very attractive piece from a defunct local.

Cinnabar
Specimen #pohl02
2.3 x 2.0 x 1.4cm
Thumbnail
Xiangxi
Hunan Province
China
$95

Here's a very lustrous, dark cherry red, individual cinnabar xl on matrix (possibly calcite). The xl itself measures 1.8 x 1.1cm.  A very colorful and attractive Chinese specimen, in my humble opinion.  This specimen was acquired from Desmond Sacco.

Chromiian Clinochlore
var. Kammererite
Specimen #pohl03
3.5 x 2.0 x 2.0cm
Small Miniature
Kop Krom Mine
Kop Daglari
Erzurum Province
Turkey
$195

Kammererite is the chrome rich variety of the micaceuos mineral clinochlore.  It has been found in many places around the world but by far the best specimens come from Turkey.  Kammererite has extremely GREAT cleavage and is easily damaged.  Finding specimens with pointed crystals is a challenge owing to the cleavage and softness of the mineral.  The crystals on this specimen are intact with complete terminations ranging in size to 0.7cm.  It is much better in person than my humble photographs portray.

Dioptase
Specimen #pohl04
1.7 x 1.6 x 1.1cm
Thumbnail
Kaokoveld
Namibia
$250

This specimen is pure emerald green gem!  It's made up of a cluster of dioptase xls with a smattering of what appears to be water clear calcite, which serves as a nice contrast.   A very colorful and gemmy specimen which was acquired from Bruce Cairncross.

Dioptase on Calcite
Specimen #pohl05
3.6 x 2.4 x 1.4cm
Miniature
Tsumeb Mine
Tsumeb, Namibia
Defunct Local
Fluorescent
$195

This specimen is made up of two gemmy and undamaged emerald green dioptase xls on a bed of calcite.  The two xls measure: 0.8 x 0.6cm and 0.9 x 0.5cm. They sit on top of a bed of calcite, which when exposed to SW UV light, glows bright orange.

Fluorite and Dolomite
Specimen #pohl06
4.7 x 3.3 x 2.5cm
Large Miniature
Elmwood Mine
Carthage
Smith County
Tennessee, USA
$150

I've got a few of these Elmwood specimens in my own personal collection, and I have to say that this one is very "cute".  I love the composition and placement of all the mineral species and how they blend together to make a very attractive display specimen.  The large fluorite xl is violet in color, undamaged and measures 1.7 x 1.3cm.  Besides the barite "ball", this specimen also has a "smattering" of dolomite xls along with a small sphalerite xl making this an excellent example of the best that Elmwood produced.  Cool rock!

Gold
Specimen #pohl07
2.0 x 1.0cm
Thumbnail
Shaba Mine
Zimbabwe
Africa
0.7 grams
$150

Here's a very attractive gold specimen from Zimbabwe.  This crystalline gold piece is made up of flattened octahedra and reminds me of a sea horse.  There are a a number of small (<1mm) quartz xls imbedded throughout this piece.  A very attractive gold specimen, in my humble opinion.

Hausmannite
Specimen #pohl08
3.0 x 2.8 x 2.6cm
Large Thumbnail
N'Chwaning Mines
Kuruman
Cape Province
South Africa
$225

If you're a sci-fi nut like me, then what does this specimen remind you of?  To me it looks like a Goa'uld Mother Ship (Stargate SG1).  It's made up of pseudo-octahedral jet black and highly reflective xls.  Simply put, this piece is made up of numerous perfect little pyramids, stacked one on top of another.  A really cool rock!

Lazulite and Siderite
Specimen #pohl09
3.9 x 2.6 x 1.5cm
Miniature
Rapid Creek
Dawson Mining District
Yukon Territory
Canada
$225

Here's a specimen from north of my border and our neighbors in Canada.  It's made up of gemmy, inky blue, pyramidal xls to 1cm. In addition to the lazulite, there are a number of  caramel brown and somewhat gemmy siderite xls scattered about the piece.  Really dark and gemmy Yukon lazulite specimens such as this one, are very difficult to photograph, and appear much better in person.  Enjoy, eh!

Quartz with Hematite (Japan Law Twin)
Specimen #pohl10
2.8 x 2.6 x 1.0cm
Thumbnail
Denny Gorge
Denny Creek
King County
Washington
$150

Here's a very attractive specimens from just north of my location, here in Oregon.  It's a very attractive Japan Law twinned quarts specimen that's included with hematite.  The quartz xls are flattened, somewhat occluded and as best as I can tell, undamaged.  A rather interesting and somewhat unusual specimen from Washington State.
