Rhodochrosite and Quartz
Specimen #pohl12
4.8 x 3.1 x 2.8cm
Large Miniature
Huayallapon Mine
Pasto Bueno, Ancash Department
Peru
$225

I haven't seen specimens of this quality come out of  Pasto Bueno in quite some time.  The mine has just not produced quality specimens like these in a number of years.  According to Scott, it may be "played out" for this quality of specimen, so we may or may not see any more quality rhodos coming from this local.  It's made up of a mass of gemmy, cherry red rhombs to 1.5cm that surround a quartz spire that is 3.7cm long.  A quality rhodo specimen from Peru!

Huayallapon Mine
Pasto Bueno, Ancash Department
Peru
$195

Here's another quality specimen from Pasto Bueno. The card that comes with this specimen lists its location as Ouray, CO, but in discussing this with Scott, he assured me that he was confident that this specimen actually hails from Pasto Bueno.  It displays all of the characteristics of rhodochrosite specimens from there.  It's made up of a number of translucent to water clear quartz xls to 2.7 cm that have one larger gemmy, pinkish to cherry red rhodo xl (0.9x0.8cm) handsomely adhering to the side of one of the quartz xls.  There are also a few smaller pink rhombs on the front of the dominant quartz xl.  Another quality rhodo specimen from Peru!

Cobaltoan Smithsonite
Specimen #pohl14
2.2 x 1.7 x 1.3cm
Thumbnail
Tsumeb Mine
Tsumeb, Namibia

Here's a pale lavender and somewhat gemmy smithsonite specimen from Tsumeb that was acquired from Desmond Sacco.  It's made up of two larger xls that are complemented by a number of smaller xls on a bit of matrix.   The largest xl measures 1.0x1.0cm.  There are what appear to be minor contact points on the larger xl but mainly visible under magnification.

Sturmanite on Manganite
Specimen #pohl15
2.3 x 1.6 x 1.2cm
Thumbnail
N'Chwaning I Mine
Kalahari manganese fields
Northern Cape Province, South Africa
Very Rare Mineral -Defunct Local
$250

I absolutely love the color contrast of this specimen.  The Sturmanite xl is a neon yellow to lime green color, measures 1.5x1.0cm and sits on top of a bed of manganite.  There are a few smaller xls imbedded in the manganite.  According to Mindat.org, although the Black Rock mine is the type locality for the mineral, it is believed that the actual type locality is the Wessels mine due to an error in labeling the type specimen. No subsequent specimens containing sturmanite or other minerals on the type specimen have been found since (similar material from Wessels was found from 5 pockets in the years 1978-1982).  This specimen was acquired from Bruce Cairncross.

Very Rare Mineral -Defunct Local

Here's another quality specimen from a defunct local in South Africa.  The Sturmanite xl on this specimen measures 1.3x0.9cm, is somewhat occluded and is brownish red to root beer in color. It sits on top of a bed of what appears to be a bed of quartz xls.  The sturmanite xl has a cleavage on one side of the xl, but it seems to be stable and being held in place by the quartz xls, thus the lower price.   As stated previously,  according to Mindat.org and Minmax this is a very rare mineral species; one that has not been produced in quite some time.  This specimen was acquired from Desmond Sacco.

Sugilite with Hydroxyapophyllite and Quartz
Specimen #pohl17
4.4 x 3.8 x 2.5cm
Miniature
N'Chwaning II Mine
Kalahari manganese fields
Northern Cape Province, South Africa
$75

The N'Chwaning Mine is famous for its world class Rhodochrosite crystals. What most people don't know is that it also produces the somewhat rare mineral Hydroxyapophyllite.  This specimen is made up blocky, violet colored Sugilite surrounding a mass of hydroxyapophyllite xls to 0.6cm, with minor quartz.  A very colorful and unusual specimen which was acquired from Bruce Cairncross.

Tourmaline
Specimen #pohl18
3.5 x 2.2 x 1.5cm
Miniature
Minas Gerais
Brazil
$95

I don't come across tourmaline specimens still attached to matrix all that often.  This specimen consists of a magenta colored, singly terminated xl that measures 3.5x0.9cm.  The xl shows a bit of internal fracturing but is very colorful and is much better in person than my humble photos portray.  Enjoy!

Wulfenite on Barite
Specimen #pohl19
5.2 x 3.7 x 2.2cm
Small Cabinet
Touissit Mine
Oujda, Morocco
$125

Here's the last of the Pohl specimens I purchased.  I've listed many a wulfenite specimen from Mexico and the US, but this is my first from Morocco.  The specimen is made up of a gemmy, undamaged, bright orange wulfenite xl (2.0x1.2cm) that sits perched on top of a bed of barite xls.  The first photo I listed reminds me of a lion with a broad and expansive main.  An attractive and interesting mineral specimen.
