Rhodochrosite
Specimen #rh08soaf01
4.1 x 3.7 x 1.2cm
Miniature
N'Chwaning Mine #2
Kuruman, Cape Province
South Africa
$45

Here's a specimen that's made up of small dark pink botryoidal rhodo masses to 7mm.  They appear to have a druzy quartz coating giving them their luster and shine! There is some very minor edge damage present.

Here's a really cute specimen that can be displayed from either side.  One side is made up of a generation of bright pink rhodochrosite with a subsequent deposition of cherry red to water clear scalenohedral xls.  There is some minor edge abrasion evident, but otherwise this specimen is intact and displays very well!

This is an excellent display specimen!  It's made up of bladed rhodo xls as well as conglomerations of what can best be described as fan shaped xls.  The color of this piece is dark pink and the xls are perched on a bed of jet black manganite really setting off their color.  There is some edge abrasion evident on this specimen, but otherwise it is intact and a very showy mineral specimen.

This specimen displays the unusual feature of the individual crystals having flat terminations, rather than the more common "dog-tooth" points.  This is caused by a later, secondary overgrowth of rhodochrosite on earlier formed xls that had sharp terminations.  This piece displays xls that are what I would describe as red wine colored. Some minor edge damage to this piece, but otherwise it is intact and very showy!

This piece reminds me of the surface of mars.  It is nearly round and displays what look like canals or channels.  I would consider this piece botryoidal with a druzy quartz coating giving it its sheen.  This is one cool rock indeed!

Rhodochrosite replacing Calcite

This piece consists of a couple of scalenohedral calcite xls that are being replaced by a thin layer of druzy bright pink rhodochrosite. The area around the termination of the larger calcite xl has had the rhodochrosite xls come off of it.  An interesting pseudomorph specimen!

This is a very interesting rhodochrosite formation.  The xl is gemmy, translucent and measures 2.2 cm across.  I guess I would best describe it as botryoidal in form, but you may see something a bit different as it is an unusual specimen.  No damage.

This specimen is pure bubble gum botryoidal rhodochrosite.  It's made up of a number of botryoidal masses forming one big hunk of bazooka bubble gum.  It's virtually perfect all around with no damage!

Here's a colorful and showy specimen that's made up of bright pink, intricately curved rhodochrosite blades.  I don't come across many specimens with this form and I find it very attractive and unique.  There is edge abrasion present on this specimen but it does take away from its displayability.  This is one cool rock with a very unique habit.  Enjoy!
