Folks, It's been a crazy, busy
summer and as I take a break to come up for air; it's already the
second day of fall. Hmmmm? Where does the time go?
Summer was just getting started when I was asked to take on a temporary
assignment on the Deschutes National Forest as the Deputy Forest
Supervisor - A GREAT opportunity. That took a two month bite out
of my summer, and Kim, Marina and I just got back from a glorious
trip to
Hawaii; my first. It was a high school graduation present for my
daughter Marina. An experience that none of us will soon
forget.
OK.........By
now I'm boring you to tears with family stuff, but I am getting to the
point........... so bare with me please. It was way back in July
when I last managed to find the time to post an update, and for those
of you who have been patiently waiting; your patience will pay
off soon. Before we left for Maui, I had a chance to visit Scott
Werschky in Reno and came home with a number of outstanding mineral
specimens. My plan is to begin posting them in the next few weeks
and this message will serve as a preview of coming attractions.
I went to visit Scott because he had
been holding a number of outstanding Uchucchacua Rhodochrosite
specimens for me and the time had come to wheel and deal. Of
course, upon showing up, he showed me a collection of specimens he had
just
purchased. They are from a South African collector named Wolfgang
Pohl. Many of the specimens Mr. Pohl purchased, came from Desmond
Sacco and Bruce Cairncross; world famous collectors themselves.
An interesting note about Wolfgang's collection was that he drew a
picture of each specimen on the collection card he created for it.
The
following are just a small representative sample of the specimens I'll
be posting in the coming weeks from Mr. Pohl's collection. I hope
you enjoy them as much as I did picking them out for y'all.
This
Rhodochrosite on Manganite specimen from Hotazel may yet make it
into my collection. It is absolutely fabulous nearly round Rhodo
xl with a clear coating of quartz over it. You just don't
see specimens of this quality come onto the market anymore except when
one appears from someone's personal collection. This is an
outstanding mineral specimen!
Here's one of the many other
quality (many from N'Chwaning) specimens that I purchased from
Wolfgang's collection. This is a awesome Sturmanite specimen from
N'Chwaning. The neon yellow/green color is better in person than
my humble picture portrays.
A Rhodo from
Pasto Bueno, Peru. There haven't been specimens of this quality
come from Pasto Bueno in quite some time, and I came home with a
couple.
Besides specimens from the Pohl collection, I did manage to add to my
stock of quality worldwide specimens. Here, are but a few examples:
Ettryngite -
N'Chwaning
Pyrite +/- Marcasite - Missouri Sphalerite and
Pyrite - Peru
GOLD
You can't visit Nevada without coming home
with a few gold specimens. I selected specimens from the Eagle's
Nest mine in California; the Sacramento River, near Redding, CA; Round
Mountain Mine, NV; and Papua New Guinea. A dazzling selection of
gold specimens from all around this world of ours. Here's one
from Eagle's Nest, CA.
While
poking around Scott's specimens, I came across the bluest Aquamarine
specimens I've ever seen. I had to ask him if they had been
treated to make them look this way and he reported that indeed, they
had not. They come from a brand new find in Taplejing, Nepal of
all places. I snatched all five that Scott had to offer. Their
color is outrageous!
Lastly,
how could I get away without snatching up a few more quality
Rhodochrosite specimens? After all, that was the original intent
of my visit. The following are but a small sample of
the pieces I brought home from the Uchucchacua Mine in Peru.
Scott has been sitting on these for awhile and I was lucky enough to
come away with the pick of the litter. I selected a number of
smaller and ultimately much more affordable specimens. I have to
stress that specimens of this quality have not been produced from this
local in quite some time. Enjoy!
Stay
tuned...........These and many more quality specimens are yet to come.
Check back often, as I plan to post a number of new updates from now
through early December.
