San Juan County
Colorado
USA
4.9 x 4.0 x 2.5 cm
Large Miniature

This specimen consists of massive sea foam green fluorite that hosts botryoidal groups of pink rhodochrosite xls to 8mm. The fluorite appears to have some quartz encasing it in places while some of the rhodo clusters are incomplete. Minor pyrite and possibly galena. This locale has been closed for some time now and specimens such as this one are becoming ever more difficult to obtain. Cool rock!

Rhodochrosite on Quartz
Specimen #rds,qtz.us.ss
Hedgehog Pocket
Sweet Home Mine
Park County
Colorado
USA
2.1 x 1.3 x 1.1cm
Thumbnail
$95

Those of you who know me, know that I am predominately a Rhodochrosite collector. I also try and find specimens that my customers would appreciate, for not only their appearance, but cost as well. I am sorry to report that the trends we've noticed over the last few years appear to be continuing. This year in Tucson, Chinese Rhodo specimens took a dramatic jump in price and the only reason for this astronomic increase in price that was offered to me was that mining operations were no longer finding or producing additional specimens. I can honestly say that we noticed a doubling or tripling of rhodo prices for material from China versus last year.

In addition, our long time supplier of quality and affordable Sweet Home specimens (Dr. Karen J. Wenrich, Crystals Unlimited) told me that she has exhausted her supply of specimens. Karen was one of the authors of the Sweet Home Mine edition of the Mineralogical Record (July-August 1998, Volume 29, Number 4).

I've shared this long winded story to emphasize the fact that I'm just about at the point where I will not be able to share Sweet Home specimens, such as this one, any longer. Our bank account just can't tolerate it.

This specimen consists of a one larger pale pink rhodo xl (7x6mm) adjacent to a small cluster of cloudy quartz xls, one of which has cleaved.  There are also a number of small rhodo xls adorning the quartz xls.  A very attractive thumbnail indeed! Comes mounted on a clear acrylic base.

Rhodochrosite with Fluorite
Specimen #rds,fl.us.uoz
Sweet Home Mine
Alma District
Park County
Colorado
USA
6.0 x 3.7 x 2.6cm
Small Cabinet
Fluorescent

To me, this is an excellent representative Sweet Home piece, as it displays many of the species found there.  On this specimen you can see:  Rhodochrosite, Fluorite, Apatite, Galena, Quartz, Tetrahedrite and Pyrite.  That's a mouthful!  The Rhodo xls are pale pink in color, some gemmy and mostly intact with some edge bruising.  The fluorite xls are royal purple and some display a druzy coating of white quartz xls.  All in all, there is allot going on with this specimen.  Fluoresces under SW UV light.  Comes mounted on a clear acrylic base.  Enjoy!

This specimen consists of a base of matrix and galena that have been nearly covered by pale pink botryoidal Rhodochrosite rosettes.  Scattered all through the rosettes are gemmy to milky quartz xls.  A small "vug" displays a golden spherical pyrite xl.  This is an excellent specimen, displaying wonderful mineral crystallization with minimal trivial edge damage.  One cool rock!  Includes the Leavitt's col. card.

Wulfenite
Specimen #2.wul.mx.o
Sierra de Los Lamentos
Chihuahua
Mexico
2.7 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm
Thumbnail
$95

While scouring the halls, rooms, and exhibits throughout Tucson, we came upon a couple who were selling their father's collection at his request. They had a number of very attractive specimens and we purchased a number of them.

This piece is made up of a number of burnt orange wulfenite xls to 1.6cm. They are somewhat gemmy to my eye and display very well. This piece is mostly damage free except for a ding to the back side of the major xl. This is an excellent thumbnail specimen from a world class location, in my humble estimation.

This specimen consists of a single, burnt orange wulfenite xl.  It is somewhat gemmy to my eye and displays very well. It is virtually damage free except that one edge of the xl appears to be contacted.  This is an excellent thumbnail specimen from a world class location, in my humble estimation.
