This specimen consists of an aggregation of opaque, gray, smoky quartz xls that host numerous, iron black, lustrous, dipyramidal xls to 1.2cm. Brookite on smoky quartz has been collected in the Magnet Cove area since before 1850. Attractive large crystals are scarce, whereas smaller crystals are abundant in the soils at several locations. Silica for the formation of smoky quartz came directly from the host rock, the Arkansas Novaculite.
I've been searching the web and just can't find many specimens that match this one for size of xls as well as their abundance. Arlene did well when she purchased this specimen directly from the miner. If you collect specimens from Arkansas or brookite, this specimen is for you.
In Arlene's words: "In the mid 60's, we lived in Charleston, South Carolina. My 12 year old daughter Sheri, our boxer dog Champ and I drove across country going from rock show to rock collector to rock location. In the Hot Springs, Arkansas area, I located the miner of the Brookite, Mr. Kimsey. I spent all the money I had and traded and sold across country."
