From what Kim and I were able to deduce from an extensive Google search, these specimens were originally mined in the early seventies and this was a onetime find. Rose quartz on Smokey Quartz specimens are out there, but not like the ones from this find, where the rose quartz forms a ring (crown) or halo around the smokey quartz. The effect is quite dramatic, especially when you see it in person.
The rose quartz crystals are very well defined, transparent, and display an appealing pink color. The smokey quartz is made up of several intergrown crystals that display quite a bit of geminess, some color "zoning" and excellent luster and transparency.
I cannot stress the rarity of this specimen. As we did our research we could not find any other specimens, available or not, that came close to this one in composition, color and presentation. It grabbed my attention the first time I saw it and like it more and more every time I handle it. Enjoy!
In Arlene's words: "From the original "Big" find of crystallized Rose Quartz. An old time mineral dealer "Missouri Minerals" had a wholesale outlet in Portland, OR, but went bankrupt. I went back every day and spent whatever money we had taken in the day before."
